Our latest technology allows for Gender selection and diagnosis of Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) of embryos before transfer. Â Equine SCID is an autosomal recessive disorder; the affected foal is born with a compromised immune system, and thus usually dies of an opportunistic infection, within the first four to six months of life.
The procedure involves a very small biopsy of the embryo flushed 7-8 days after ovulation. The pregnancy rates of over 100 biopsied embryo transfers by ERI have been nearly identical (5% lower) to non-biopsied embryos. Unwanted embryos are usually frozen and stored to salvage the genetic material. The entire process of biopsy sampling and genetic testing takes approximately 2 hours.
